From the rooftops!
Seeing how this is tax season, I have clentched a small victory against the man. If you are familiar with the tax crap that I had to go through these past couple of years, you know its an earful and thoughouly depressing, serious damn the man stuff.
Here's the gyst: While I was working for 619, (05-06) he had me as an independant contractor for both years. This status can be good for the amount of deductions you can take, but the amount of taxes you will have to pay far out ways any good. You don't pay any taxes, and he doesn't pay employers tax on me because of the status. So it was his way of getting out of paying certain taxes.
So, I painfully calculated my taxes for each year, and what a complicated process it was!! To sum up, in 05 I had to pay 140$, not much because I was still in school and had a heck load of school cost/deductions. Then, first year out of school working full time at 619, despite all the possible deductions and claims I could take, and with the immense help and knowledge of my grandfather, I had to pay about 3000$. Ouch!! Plus the fact when it was tax season last year, I had just recently losy my job, double ouch.
Well, being out of a job and not wanting to pay this much (but I did get help from my wonderful grandfather so I didn't have to pay as much myself) and rather bitter about being fired, and ripped off being an independant contractor, I thought if there was anyway I could counter this. Well, finding lots of information about indep. contractors often being misfiled not as employees when they well should have been, I thought this was definatly the case.
So, I filed the report and all the information needed. Needless to say, when said boss found out I had done this, he wasn't very happy. I just played it off as I can't afford to pay this much, and trying not to. Still not happy, but thats what happens when you have bad business ethics. Well, I went about a half year of getting small papers requiring more information on the case. Then in Sept. I finally got the final ruling.
Sure enough, I was right and I won the ruling! What this meant was that I had to amend my taxes for 05 and 06. Now, doing the taxes in the first place was almost beyond confusion, then reading all the new information and how my deductions arn't applied the same way, no way i was going to be able to figure this out and have it ultimatly benefit me. So I found a local tax guy to help out.
Well, help out he did! A couple weeks ago I turned in all my tax information to him and explained everything. I had to gather a bit other information before he could file. Well, I got all my deductions and tax information to him this weekend. Well, the verdict is the IRS owes me about $2300!!! Whooo hooo! That is from 05 (a little bit) and about 1900 from 06.
WHOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!

(I know I'm not a skinny black guy, but this best captures the hoora!)
I told my brother that when I filed my taxes, that hopefully if all worked out the way I was hoping, I would get money back this year and use that money for europe, well europe here I come!!!
It really makes me think that despite what the circumstances may be, when you really have to skim by, just tough it out, and do what you are supposed to, and it will come back to benefit you somehow in the end.
Well, if anyone needs a tax guy, let me know. I knows his stuff and got me far more than I was expecting.
